Quito: Data Sources & Processing

The Forest Footprint Tool uses the latest and most reliable data to calculate the Forest Footprints of cities. As new datasets are added to the framework they will be updated here.

Soy

Food

Data source:FAO New Food Balance Sheets

Data processing: The value for total annual processed soy was divided by the national population of Ecuador.

Feed

Data source:ENSN

Data processing: Data was reported for beef, chicken and pork based on % contributions of these commodities to daily fat, protein and energy intake. Assumptions on average nutritional content of commodities was used to calculate average daily consumption based on total daily intakes of fat, protein and energy. Assumptions on soy meal used in feed per unit of commodity (e.g., grams of soy per kg of beef produced) were used to calculate consumption of soy through beef, chicken and pork consumption. The final value is the sum of the average of each of the three commodities (e.g., average consumption of chicken based on energy, fat and protein intake + average beef consumption based on fat, protein and energy intake + average pork intake based on protein and fat intake).

Final value

Palm Oil

Food

Data source:ENSN

Data processing: Data was reported as % contribution of palm oil to daily fat and energy intake. Average nutritional content of palm oil was used to convert % contributions based on total daily intake of fat and energy. Final value is an average of the two consumption values.

Fuel

Data source:FAO New Food Balance Sheets

Data processing: Total annual palm oil reported as “other uses (non-food)” was divided by the national population.

Final value

Beef

Food

Data sources: ENSN & INEC, 2013

Data processing: The average of the two data sources was used.

ENSN data was reported as % contribution of beef to daily fat, protein and energy intake. Average nutritional content of beef was used to convert % contributions based on total daily intake of fat, protein and energy. Final value is an average of the three consumption values.

INEC data was taken from microdata table ENIGHUR11_GDIARIOS_SECCION2.sav (daily household purchase data). For all households in Quito, each beef commodity was processed as follows: Total reported amount was converted to tonnes, and adjusted based on reported frequency of purchase (daily, weekly, bimonthly, annually etc...) to represent an estimate of monthly purchases. The average consumption per capita was calculated and used to remove one outlier (1 tonne of beef per capita per month). The total tonnes for each commodity were calculated and entered in the spreadsheet. Per capita annual value for each beef sub-commodity was calculated using the total # people in surveyed households in Quito (taken from the microdata table "enighur11_identificacion.sav" and adjusted to only include households that responded to the daily spending survey).

Leather

Data sources:UN COMTRADE &UN FAOSTAT

Data processing: Net national data was calculated as the sum of annual beef leather production (UN FAOSTAT) and all beef leather imports (UN COMTRADE), minus all beef leather exports (UN COMTRADE). The final value was divided by the national population.

Final value

Only the value for food was used.

Wood Fibre

Wood

Data source:ENEDBuilding Survey, Dirección de Estadísticas Económicas

Data processing:

Final value

The final value is the sum of wood, wood fuel and paper values.

Hotspot Crops

Rubber

Data Source:UN COMTRADE &UN FAOSTAT

Data processing:

Net national level data was calculated as follows for tires, natural rubber and other rubber: sum of annual production (UN FAOSTAT) and imports (UN COMTRADE), minus all exports (UN COMTRADE). The final value was divided by the national population.

Cocoa

Data Source: NA

Data processing: NA

Others

Data Source: Net fromUN COMTRADE &FAOSTAT

Data processing:

Net national level data was calculated for coffee, tobacco & spices as follows: sum of annual production (UN FAOSTAT) and imports (UN COMTRADE), minus all exports (UN COMTRADE). The final value was divided by the national population.

Final value

The final value is a sum of the three subcategories.

Other Crops

Data source:FAO New Food Balance Sheets

Data processing: Total Domestic Supply (annual) for each category was divided by the national population. Annual per capita for each category was su,,ed for the final value.

Final value

Value used as is.

Other Deforestation

Data source: Pendrill et al., 2019

Data processing: Calculated at a per-capita rate from forest loss not attributed by Pendrill et al. 2019.
